Conservation Director, WWF-Malaysia
Dr. Sundari Ramakrishna overseas the entire Conservation Department comprising of 130 staff and the department is divided into 7 main thrust areas such as species (both marine and terrestrial), forests, freshwater, protected areas, spatial plan, fisheries, and markets work respectively. The priority regional conservation work of WWF-MY is in the Coral Triangle Ecoregion, Heart of Borneo and places in Malaysia that support elephants, rhinos, orangutan, tigers, turtles and focusing on market transformation promoting sustainable supply chain of commodities such as timber, pulp & paper, palm oil and fisheries. She previously (1997 to 2006) led the Malaysia Office of Wetlands International as its Executive Director and until recently (2007-2010) served as the Malaysian Environmental NGO Coordinator for the 20 member environmental NGO coalition, managing the secretariat, providing leadership and delivering technical outputs on a DANIDA-funded biodiversity project. Sundari was a founding member of MENGO since 2003. Sundari has a Bachelor of Science from Panjab University, India; Diploma of Education from London University and a Ph.D. in Marine Microbiology from University of Malaya. Sundari discovered a new marine microfungus off Pangkor Island, Malaysia in 1994. She has co-authored, written and edited a total of 35 publications including papers in peer reviewed journals, contributed chapters in books, conference & seminar proceedings, guide books and manuals. Sundari has been the Chairperson of FSC- Malaysia Board since 2013 till to date.
